ACADEMIC / BEHAVIORAL HELP & ACCOMODATION'S
Prior to working with Palm Beach Counseling, I served as a school counselor for the Palm Beach County School District, where she collaborated closely with adolescents, families, and couples. She has extensive experience supporting adolescents facing challenges such as peer pressure, test anxiety, bullying, low self-esteem, Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD), Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), and more. Adolescents struggling with academic performance due to these challenges learn effective techniques to enhance their academic success.
During my time as a Guidance Counselor in the Palm Beach County School District, I gained in-depth knowledge of Florida's state graduation requirements, the process of obtaining accommodations like 504 Plans and IEPs, and the steps required for admission to competitive colleges.
I also work closely with parents, providing education, support, and practical tools to help alleviate frustration and confusion during challenging times. She teaches parents techniques to consistently and effectively support their child’s growth. I believe that consistency and communication are essential to achieving success when working with children and adolescents.
ATTENTION DEFICIT
Children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD), Asperger’s Syndrome and/or other disruptive or negative classroom behaviors show difficulty with appropriate classroom behavior, such as waiting his/her turn, raising his/her hand for attention, following directions, staying on task, and playing safely with peers. Such behaviors can interfere with the child’s learning and the learning of his/her peers. Effective interventions include daily report cards and social skills training whereby children earn points and rewards for positive behaviors in the classroom, at home, and with peers.
ORGANIZATION, TIME MANAGEMENT & STUDY SKILLS
As children progress through school, academic demands increase, placing greater strain on their cognitive and executive functioning skills. Many bright students succeed at first, but eventually poor study habits may no longer be enough. Support in areas such as organization (desk, backpack, homework space), time management (schedules, assignments), and study skills (note-taking, test preparation) can make a significant difference, giving children the tools they need to thrive.
LACK OF MOTIVATION & PROCRASTINATION
Many teens struggle with motivation and procrastination when it comes to schoolwork. Although they have the aptitude and cognitive ability, they often find it difficult to "get in gear" or make productive choices when it's time to study. After ruling out any learning, attention, mood, or processing issues, other potential causes may include academic anxiety or avoidance, which can stem from: 1) feeling overwhelmed and unsure of where to begin; 2) a lack of knowledge or ability to complete the work; 3) a lack of desire due to the work being unpleasant; or 4) using passive-aggressive behavior to express underlying anger. The first step in treatment is recognizing the avoidance and then taking action to find effective solutions.
SCHOOL EVALUATIONS
When children or adolescents display repeated aggression or make suicidal or homicidal statements at school, they are often suspended until a medical or mental health professional can assess whether they are "safe to return to school." This process typically involves interviewing all parties involved and examining stressors and behaviors at home, school, and with peers. While it's not uncommon for children to make statements for attention, whether to provoke a reaction from peers or adults, more serious comments often indicate a child’s internal struggle, a desire for help, or significant distress.
